Solder System vs. Press Fit Technology

New installation methods in the market today offer the customer several options when considering domestic water piping systems for new construction or an existing facility. While there are several variations, this article focuses upon the conventional method of copper with soldered fittings and the pressed fitting that is available from Viega ProPress.

Conventional methods include using a torch with flux and solder to make a pipe joint. This method requires that the system be drained and completely dry for renovations or revisions to the system. This method also requires a torch which can cause burning or heat damage to adjacent materials. Using a torch and flux also can be messy while the process is performed.

A new method in modern construction is the press fit system. Pro-press is a press fit system, made of 40% recycled materials. It can be utilized without completely draining and drying the system. Benefits from this system include time savings and the elimination of flames, solder, and flux which lends to a safer work environment with better air quality. Though simpler and easier to install than conventional plumbing methods, the pricing between press fit systems and standard copper systems are not the
same. The fittings for a press fit system are more expensive and a special tool is required for installation.

There would be a cost savings in labor with the press fit system as compared to copper systems but the high cost of materials might offset the savings in labor. Both are proven systems that increase customer options for building or changing copper systems in their facility.
