The Sovent Single Stack System

The Sovent system is a sanitary drainage system which allows the drain, waste and venting to be performed through a single stack. Created by Fritz Sommer, in 1957, it is one of the most extensively tested systems available today and accomplishes the primary goal: to efficiently remove waste and water in plumbing fixtures from the building and to protect the trap seals. Because Sovent relies on a single stack construction, the design, installation, and inspection process can be much simpler.

How Does it Work?

The single stack system incorporates aerators and deaerators, unique to Sovent. It works by slowing the velocity of waste through a series of aerator fittings and double offsets. Before entering the building drain, a deaerator fitting is placed at the base of the stack to minimize solid build up and slow the drainage. This fitting is designed to have a pressure relief line which is to extend back (10) ten pipe diameters and tied into the building drain, eliminating any back pressure problems. The system balances the pressures to +/-1” water column per industry performance standards.

Advantages of Sovent with BCH Design Build

  • Saves space because there is one stack and no added vents
  • Easier to design, with less equipment to review–there are fewer coordination concerns
  • Cost effective and can be incorporated into the design for owner savings
  • Reliable technology that has been around for over 50 years and has undergone extensive testing
  • Qualifies for LEED credit
  • Requires less materials (pipe/fittings)
  • Minimizes water testing, due to less pipe, and related labor
  • Decreases the number of penetrations needed
  • Reduces coordination delays

Is Sovent Right for Your Next Project?

The cost-effectiveness of this system is typically determined by the plumbing layout. Therefore, you may want to consider incorporating Sovent into your next residential or high-rise project. If you do, bring BCH onboard at the design stage. We can help you realize significant savings with this, and many other mechanical, plumbing, and med gas options.
